India’s first, comprehensive institute of contemporary music set to open up lucrative careers in music

MUMBAI, ( GNS) : Come September, The True School of Music, will open its doors to professional and budding musicians at Sunmill Compound, Lower Parel, Mumbai for rigorous vocational training programs in all aspects of contemporary music. Spread over 15,000 square feet, India’s first comprehensive academy of contemporary music will host state-of-the-art infrastructure, recording studios, a comprehensive music library, auditorium for live gigs and consoles for DJs, in addition to resident faculty from The Manhattan School of Music, New York City, professional instrument courses authored by leading music educators in the USA and sound engineering and music production courses developed by ACM, UK.

The True School of Music is the brainchild of Ashutosh Phatak (Ashu), a renowned music composer himself, and Nitin Chandy, a Sound Engineer by profession, whose idea, according to Ashu, has been “simmering within my sub-conscience for at least 15 years.” Recalling his initial years as a career musician, Ashu told mediapersons here today, “Learning on the job was the only way to gain knowledge and techniques for a professional career in music in India. But, you had to already be good enough to get commissioned. So only a select few who could balance this Catch 22 situation managed to get ahead and have successful careers.”

“It’s shocking to me that there is YET no institute that provides a technically firm grounding for career oriented musicians. With the intense growth of live music scene (post Blue Frog) and a steady rise in the Advertising and Film industries, job opportunities are increasing each day. As musicians who will grab such opportunities in a burgeoning industry, there is even greater need to have a foundation of education to add longevity and an international level of skills for this segment.” he added.

“Today those talented musicians and music ‘hopefuls’ who are serious about making a career out of their passion, go to the US to study at Berklee College of Music, Boston, US, MI (Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music, Hollywood, California, US) or Manhattan School of Music, New York City, US or to the UK to ACM (Academy of Contemporary Music). For a large pool of people, this is not an option because they simply can’t afford it. We wanted to give them a global music education in their own country, at a fraction of the cost.” said Nitin Chandy.

Ashu and Nitin first focused on finding the support to kick-start this ambitious project. Growth capital investors, Zodius Capital, picked up on the vision and stepped right in. “We were looking at supporting education for ‘new age’ professions in this country. Music was high on our horizon and seemed like a natural fit.” says Neeraj Bhargava, Senior Managing Director & CEO, Zodius Capital Advisors. Added Anuraag Srivastava, Managing Director of Zodius Capital Advisors, “The True School value proposition is sound.  As we looked at growing career opportunities emerging from the rapid growth in live performances and rising production of music for a diverse range of communications including advertising, gaming, non-Bollywood entertainment, etc., we were convinced True School not only allows students to follow their passion but also build a real career as a music industry professional.”

The next big challenge was the course curriculum. “We approached some of the best names in the world of contemporary music to design the course and curriculum, especially for The True School.” said Ashu. “Once I explained our concept to David Liebman, a multi-award winning American saxophonist and flautist, and ex Miles Davis band member, he not only endorsed the idea, he was excited enough to seal the alliance with The Manhattan School of Music where he is currently the Artist-in-residence.”

“TABcab executed 32 brand campaigns on Taxi Ads in one year”.

Posted on 21 May 2013 by admin Roha

Mumbai, ( AJAY RAWAL ) : With its White Cabs with Red Bumpers and advertisements pasted on 4 doors and boot, TABcab has established itself as the highest visible transit advertising medium in the city of Mumbai. Exactly a year back TABcab launched its first TaxiAds campaign and in a year it has executed 32 brand’s campaigns with average inventory usage of 150 cabs per campaign, totaling to 5000 cab cycles (one cab cycle: one cab for one month).

It has executed campaigns for large multinational as well as local brands such as Standard Chartered Bank, TATA I-Shakti, Docomo, Ultratech Seal & Dry, MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism), Westside, MTV, Comedy Central, Regus, Lovable, Live-In, ICICI, Union Bank, Central Bank, Shakti Bhog, 99 Acres, Swarg Jewelers, Cera, J Hampstead, Godrej, Bharat Matrimony, Parampara, Richfeel etc. Almost every category has used the medium and found value in it, since it reaches out to length and breadth of the City and delivers an impactful campaign because of high penetrated reach and frequency, the company’s  release said.

TA  Bcab is a new radio taxi service in Mumbai with license to operate 4000 Cabs tendered by MMRTA. TABcab is currently running 1850 cabs in Mumbai, which is the largest in terms of on-road cabs. TABcab will also launch another 950 cabs within next one month.

As brands move their spends from static to dynamic and transit mediums, Taxi Ads are gaining momentum and have been used by some major brands across cities in India and across the world. TABcab offers high visibility and engagement platform through Taxi Ads, reaching out to every nook and corner of the city which is not possible by other static or transit mediums, since buses which are the other widely used transit mediums, have a set route and can’t go inside lane. They can also be used for activation, sampling and other engagement activities since travel time in Mumbai ranges between 45 minutes to 2 hours per trip which is very high captive time for communicating, the release added.

Spot fixing: Supreme Court refuses to ban IPL

Posted on 21 May 2013 by admin Roha

NEW DELHI, ( GNS) : The Supreme Court today refused to ban the IPL as a game and as a league as it dismissed a petition seeking to scrap the remaining matches of IPL-6 amid growing concerns about corruption in the sport. The apex court, however, pulled up the BCCI for its lackadaisical attitude and asked for an action report within two weeks.
Meanwhile, the spot fixing saga snared its first Bollywood victim with Vindoo Dara Singh being arrested by Mumbai crime branch officials for his links with betting mafia. Vindoo, the son of the late Dara Singh, will be produced in a Mumbai lower court on Wednesday. News channels quoted sources as saying Vindoo was arrested following the arrest of Ramesh Vyas, who is linked to key bookies Jupiter and others named by Delhi police.
Vindoo, the winner of a realty show, was in constant touch with Vyas, according to call details.
News channel CNN-IBN quoted sources as saying Vindoo was named by Vyas and questioned by the Mumbai Police on Monday night before being formally arrested today morning. Vindoo has reportedly admitted to betting after being questioned for hours by Mumbai Police.

While directing the one man commission appointed by the BCCI to look into IPL irregularities and submit its report within two weeks, the apex court said: “The credibility of the game should be maintained. Spot-fixing is because of lackadaisical attitude of the BCCI and must stop.”
An apex court bench of Justices B.S. Chauhan and Dipak Misra asked the BCCI to take appropriate actions against the individual players as well as the team indulging in illegal activities in order to make sure the “gentleman’s game” keeps up its status.
“There has to be scientific, rational and dispassionate approach by BCCI to stop fixing,” the Supreme Court said,
The court also said that even judges were shocked by the spot-fixing scandal and added cricket is a gentleman’s game and should remain as such.
In its reply, the BCCI said it has appointed the board’s anti-corruption unit chief Ravi Sawani to look into the IPL irregularities; and added anti-graft officials will accompany IPL teams.
Former Test bowler S Sreesanth and two other players were arrested along with 11 bookmakers on Thursday on suspicion of spot-fixing in the IPL.
The case has prompted the government to look at the possibility of introducing a law to combat match fixing and spot-fixing.

Cricket fan Sudarsh Awasti, an architect by profession and self-declared social activist, had lodged the petition with the court demanding the scrapping of the remaining four IPL matches, including Sunday’s final.

He had also called for a special investigation to be launched to get to the bottom of the spot-fixing scandal and for the league to be banned from next year.

Sreesanth has been mistakenly arrested, says his lawyer

Posted on 17 May 2013 by admin Roha

NEW DELHI. ( GNS) : Indian pacer and Rajasthan Royals player S Sreesanth  has been ‘falsely or mistakenly’ arrested by the police, his lawyer said on Friday.
Talking to mediamen, his lawyer, Deepak Prakash said: “Sreesanth has been falsely or mistakenly arrested. They (Delhi Police) have got some wrong information or mistakenly arrested him.”
Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates – Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested late Wednesday and accused of spot-fixing in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The cricketer-trio and 11 bookies have been charged with cheating and criminal conspiracy.
According to police, Chavan Friday broke down under interrogation and has accepted his role in the spot-fixing scandal. However, Prakash said the confession had “no value”.
“They (players) have to confess before the court. Police can say anything, it has no value at all,” said Prakash.
“Anyway, Sreesanth is not confessing. Though his name has been involved, there is no issue with Sreesanth. He will fight it out.
“He is completely cooperating and has explained his innocence,” said the lawyer further.
The lawyer also rubbished accusations that Sreesanth used a towel to signal bookies, before the start of an over that he would be giving away runs, saying that a majority of players use towels due to hot weather.
“It’s a very casual thing. Ninety percent of the players use towels. The match was played at 4 o’clock… the towel was needed,” he said.

Sreesanth and others got Rs 60 lakh for one over; more arrests likely

Sreesanth and others got Rs 60 lakh for one over; more arrests likely

NEW DELHI, ( GNS ) : Paceman S Sreesanth  and two other bowlers belonging to the Rajasthan Royals IPL team who were arrested on Thursday for spot-fixing, received upto Rs 60 lakh for one over for giving away runs as per arrangements with bookies with underworld connections abroad.
The sensational arrests of the three players  in the early hours of the morning in Mumbai by the Special Cell of Delhi Police has cast a shadow over the ongoing IPL tournament and the players have been suspended by the  BCCI .

At a crowded press conference, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said that the Special Cell had hundreds of hours of recordings of phone conversations between the players and bookies, 14 of whom have also been arrested. More arrests are on the anvil but the role of no other player, Indian or foreign, has come to light.

The players and bookies, who have been brought to Delhi, have been charged under section 420 (cheating) and 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) but they are also likely to be booked under the stringent MCOCA, Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, which could land them in jail without bail and their confessions before a DCP level officer will be admissible in court.

Kumar gave a detailed account of the conversations that took place between bookies and the arrested Rajasthan Royals players — Sreesanth and spinners Ankeet Chavan  and Ajit Chandila.

Kumar revealed explosive details of the modus operandi followed by bookies and the cricketers, giving audio-visual proof of three IPL matches which were manipulated.

Kumar revealed how bookies gave the caught players specific approval codes which were used to signify a compromised over during the matches.

“In certain overs they (the players) were supposed to give away a certain amount of runs. The bookies gave players instructions that they have to indicate that they would give away these runs,” Kumar said.

“The instructions were ‘put the towel in your trousers or take time setting up the field or take out the shirt or the vests that you are wearing’,” added Kumar, elaborating on the signals that the players used to convey their consent for the bookies’ instructions.

The top cop listed three Rajasthan Royals’ matches — on May 5, 9 and 15 against Pune Warriors, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians respectively — where spot-fixing  took place.

“The first instance that came to our notice was Rajasthan Royals vs Pune Warriors on May 5. In this match, as already agreed upon, Chandila gave 14 runs in the second over of his spell but he forgot to give the predetermined signal due to which the bookies could not bet in this match,” Kumar said.

“This led to an argument and demands for return of money. Rs 20 lakh was advanced to him and another 20 was to be given later. He had to return the money,” he added.

DCP Sanjeev Yadav then gave an account of the conversation that took place between Chandila and a bookie named Amit Kumar before the match.

Chandila was supposed to pull up his shirt to signify the start of the manipulated over. Even though he conceded the agreed 14 runs but having forgotten to give the signal, the bookies could not place any bets.

The next match the police talked of took place on May 9 in Mohali.

“In this match, Sreesanth was to put a towel in his trousers before bowling the second over and give bookies enough time to indulge in heavy betting,” said Kumar.

The DCP then stated that in this particular match, Sreesanth’s close friend Jiju Janardhan was in touch with bookie Chandresh Patel.

“As decided Sreesanth bowled the first over without a towel. but in the second over he put a towel in his trousers and to give bookies time, he did some warm-up and stretching exercises,” he said.

“He gave 13 runs instead of the agreed 14 in his over,” said Kumar, adding that minor aberrations were not of much consequence for the bookies.

The police showed the clipping from the match in which Sreesanth bowled the compromised over with a towel.

The next game police talked about took place only the previous night against the Mumbai Indians.

“Ajit Chandila was not playing but he was acting as a go-between among the bookies and Ankeet Chavan to take Rs 60 lakh and perform as per the bookies’ instruction. He was supposed to give 13 or more runs,” Kumar said.

“He gave two runs in his first over and in the second over, in the first three balls itself he gave 14 runs after which he controlled his bowling and gave only one more run in the remaining three balls,” he added.

“Chandila motivated Chavan, they had a chat with the bookies. Chavan said ‘I would move my wristband’ to signal,” added Yadav.

Kumar said the police team was present in all these matches.

“Our team was present in all these matches. One of the reasons was because those signals could have been given during commercial breaks also, so, to keep track our team was watching the matches at the stadium,” he said.

“Sreesanth was arrested at Carter road in Mumbai, Chandila outside hotel Intercontinental where some of the bookies were staying and Ankeet Hotel Trident,” said Kumar.

Asked about how the investigation, Kumar said, “It was an information that we had that the Mumbai underworld is indulging in match-fixing or spot fixing and contacting a number of bookies and some players are mixed up,” he said.

“We were keeping them under surveillance. The names of these three came to light and we waited for a situation when all three could be pinned down,” he added.

Asked whether Dawood Ibrahim  or other underworld dons were involved, Kumar said, “it is difficult to name anybody unless we have a credible proof. There is no evidence on which basis I can name any member of the underworld…but it is sufficient to say that there is an overseas connection and we have definite proof.”

“These three players knew each other and they knew that each of them was involved.”

Asked whether Australia’s Shaun Tait or any other player is involved, Kumar said “We have no such evidence. According to us, Shaun Tait is not involved.”

Kumar laughed off the allegations by Sreesanth’s parents that India skipper Mahendra  Singh Dhoni  conspired to frame Sreesanth.

“This is totally wrong. Dhoni did not put the towel in his trouser,” he quipped.

Kumar said the players and the bookies were being monitored since the beginning of IPL.

“We were tracking them since April. We allowed them to make mistakes…Mastermind is sitting abroad,” he said.

The Commissioner said the mastermind in this episode is “sitting abroad”.

Kumar said owners of IPL teams were not involved besides ruling out the role of any batsman of any team in scam so far.

“This is not something which happens overnight. These people the bookies they spot talent, spot vulnerable people who can be compromised and they work over a period of time.

“The investigation that we have done, it is sheer coincidene that three players of the same team have come under our radar. We cannot say that it is not happening in other teams or other matches, we cannot say with certainty.

“In this investigation, only these three players have come,” he said adding that they have informed the IPL management about what has happened.

Asked whether Sreeshant was the main man in bringing the two other players into bookies’ fold as he was the senior among them, he said one cannot say. “He is not the central part,” Kumar said.

Asked about Jiju, the “close friend” of Sreesanth who was arrested from Mumbai, he said, Jiju is a close friend of Sreesanth and he played with the cricketer in club level at their home district Ernakulam.

“Jiju was the conduit between Sreeshant and the bookies. Sreeshant was given Rs 40 lakh,” he said.

He also said they may approach the Enforcement Directorate, DRI and Income Tax Department depending on the recovery of money.

Asked about the mysterious death of Special Cell Inspector Badrish Dutt, who was involved in this investigations, he said the developments in the spot-fixing case has nothing to do with Dutt.

Dutt was considered a master in technical surveillance and it was he who led the team which recorded the conversations between players and bookies.

Maharashtra traders to continue indefinite bandh against LBT

Posted on 15 May 2013 by admin Roha

Mumbai, ( GNS) : Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) representing 750 trade associations in the state today said, it would continue with its call for indefinite trade bandh along with retailers across the state till the LBT (Local Body Tax) is removed, even as the agitation entered 22nd day on May 15.

FAM president Mr Mohan Gurnani told mediapersons here today, ”   Shops may again down shutters from Wednesday to protest against the local body tax (LBT). This comes barely 24 hours after retailers called off their strike. The wholesalers’ association, Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM), has urged retailers to shut down once more in support of its campaign against LBT.Traders  were decided to Jail Bharo Andolan throughout the Maharashtra  on May 16,2013.

Mr Gurnani announced t hat neigther any traders would pay LBT nor make fresh registrations for LBT. In additonal traders should pay only five per cent portion of VAT and keep 95 per cent portion of VAT  in abeyance till LBT  has been abolished.
On Sunday, FAM, whose members are not involved in the retail business, called upon shopkeepers to pull down shutters once again. “Shopkeepers across the city have approached us to say they wish to close for the cause. We asked them to give people a respite for two-three days owing to Akshay Tritiya. We recommended they close after the festive season ends on Wednesday,” said FAM president Mohan Gurnani. FAM members will court arrest en masse on Thursday.
The wholesalers’ bandh has run for 20 days. On Tuesday, Kirti Rana, chairman of the Navi Mumbai Merchants’ Chamber, will organize a procession from APMC’s Masala Market to Siddhivinayak temple in Dadar against LBT.
Meanwhile, MNS chief Raj Thackery on Sunday urged traders in the state to keep their shops open for Akshay Tritiya. “If traders don’t open shops, MNS workers will open them.
Traders over LBT, Raj said shouldn’t hold citizens to ransom over LBT,” Raj said. The announcement of another bandh came even as jewellers hoped for promising sales at Akshay Tritiya. Last season, the bullion industry suffered a loss of Rs 20,000 crore owing to its 21-day strike over excise duty.
Several BJP leaders like Jaywantiben Mehta, Raj Purohit, Atul Shah and Mangalprabhat Lodha were present at the meeting and supported the traders’ cause. Today was the 18th day of indefinite bandh by wholesalers and fifth day by retailers of Mumbai.
Now, transporters, hawkers and Mathadi Kamgar Union (labourers) have also declared their support to traders against LBT, which would result in total closure of trade in Maharashtra, FAM president Mohan Gurnani said in a statement.
Gurnani advised traders to continue their protest peacefully and not to indulge in activities like rail roko, which could damage the image of traders even as he criticised coercive tactics of police and administration against peaceful protest by traders.
FAM Treasurer Vinesh Mehta stated that the organisation has made arrangements for supply of sugar, wheat and rice for the people during the period of agitation.

Sanjay Dutt to surrender in Mumbai court tomorrow

Sanjay Dutt to surrender in Mumbai court tomorrow

Posted on 15 May 2013 by admin Roha

Actor Sanjay Dutt

MUMBAI,( GNS) : Actor Sanjay Dutt will surrender before a designated TADA court here on Thursday in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case after the court allowed him on Wednesday to withdraw his application seeking to give himself up before Yerwada jail authorities in Pune.

Mr. Dutt’s lawyer Subhash Jadhav told the special court this morning that the actor wanted to withdraw the application filed on Tuesday and that he would surrender before the court on Thursday. The court allowed the plea to be withdrawn.

53-year-old Dutt has been convicted under the Arms Act and sentenced to five year jail term.

On May 10, the apex court had dismissed Dutt’s plea seeking review of its judgement on his conviction and five-year jail term.

Mr. Dutt was earlier granted four weeks more time to surrender to undergo the remaining jail term.

The Supreme Court, on March 21, had upheld his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, which it said was engineered by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and others with the involvement of Pakistan’s ISI.

However, the apex court had reduced to five years the six-year jail term awarded to Dutt by a designated TADA court in 2006 while ruling out his release on probation, saying the “nature” of his offence was “serious“.

Mr. Dutt was convicted by the TADA court for illegally possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, which were part of a consignment of weapons and explosives brought to India for coordinated serial blasts that killed 257 people and injured over 700 in 1993.

Manmohan Singh not invited for Sharif’s swearing-in in Pak: MEA

Posted on 14 May 2013 by admin Roha

manmohan Sharif had said in Lahore on Monday that he would be very happy to invite PM Manmohan Singh to his swearing-in for a record third term as premier.

New Delhi, ( GNS) : There is no invitation for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit Pakistan to attend the swearing-in ceremony of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, who will be forming the next government there.

“There is no specific proposal on the table, of a specific request for a specific occasion,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs told reporters when asked if there was an invite for the Prime Minister to attend Sharif’s swearing-in.

However, he recalled that Prime Minister Singh had called up Sharif to congratulate him and had extended an invitation to him to visit India on a mutually convenient date. “During the course of that conversations, Sharif also extended a similar invitation to the Prime Minister.

“And on the diplomatic agenda, these were the two issues that I am aware of following which the Prime Minister then did write to Sharif…. Other than that on the diplomatic agenda, no other specific proposals has been received or even heard of except through media,” Akbaruddin said.

Sharif had said in Lahore on Monday that he would be “very happy” to invite Prime Minister Singh to his swearing-in for a record third term as premier. “I will be very happy to extend that invitation. If they will come, it will be a great pleasure for me and for Pakistan,” Sharif had told a group of foreign journalists when asked if he would invite Singh to his swearing-in ceremony.

Asked if Singh would visit Pakistan, Akbaruddin said, “Prime Minister has previously said that he would like to visit Pakistan. This is a stated position. At this stage there is no specific proposal on the table of a specific request for a specific occasion.

“Let’s wait for specific proposals on this. As I said we are in direct contact through diplomatic channels. These diplomatic channels have functioned very well….”

He added, “…I would like to assure you, should that happen, it would be through these mechanisms and we would share them with you”.
